How to know if you should go? You’re a Christian, you love the Lord, but are not certain what he wants you to do with your life. Some people think a lot of mystery surrounds the question of discovering God’s will. However, God usually provides the answer through some very simple steps.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- Am I willing?
Have you told God you’re absolutely willing to do whatever he wants? If you would rather make the choice and then ask God to bless your plan, you don’t pass this test. You must be willing to let God choose. Pray this prayer, “Lord, I am willing to go anywhere and do anything. I want to do your will because I know it is best for me.” Jesus said, “If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out…” (John 7:17) - Do I desire to serve the Lord?
Do you ever think about the great blessings you have received from the Lord and how you might share them? Cross-cultural ministry requires an unselfish outlook. It involves giving to others, rather than thinking only of your own needs. So, being willing isn’t enough. You must also develop a desire to serve the Lord and other people. “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desire of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4) - Am I reading his word and praying for him to show me his will?
God can speak to us through his word. And we can speak to him through prayer. As we use this two-way communication, God gives us direction. If we are reading God’s word and praying, we are in a position to be led by him. He won’t let us make a mistake if we really want to do his will. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105) - Do my present circumstances allow me to go?
Sometimes the Lord gives us special responsibilities that prevent us from going away. A sick parent or a dependent family member? Poor health or an unsupportive spouse? Avoid allowing your own determination to blind you from present reality. “This is what the Lord says – ‘I am the Lord your God who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.’” (Isaiah 48:17)
Four Questions
- Am I willing?
- Do I desire to serve the Lord?
- Am I reading his word and praying for him to show me his will?
- Do my present circumstances allow me to go?
If you answered yes to these questions, you are a prime candidate for the next Heart for Honduras mission trip. Please contact:
